Most active in the U.S. state of Michigan, the group's fraternal aspects took a backseat to providing low-cost insurance to members. eventDetroit, Wayne, Michigan, USA ⇓ N Detroit Free Press The report of the drowning of August F. Schulte did not reach the city until a very late hour yesterday morning. He and Frank Cohnen had taken their families on Saturday afternoon to Cohnen's boat house, which is only a short distance from the Grosse Pointe lighthouse, to spend Sunday. After eating a hearty meal late on Sunday afternoon, Cohnen and Schulte went in swimming. Schulte was a powerful man and a good swimmer, and he struck out for deep water. Cohnen was far behind, while Mrs. Cohnen and Mrs. Schulte stood on shore watching their husbands. Suddenly Schulte threw up his hands and sank. He was not seen to rise again. It is supposed that cramps seized him and rendered him unable to swim. He lived at 268 Rivard street, and was foreman of the Detroit Bedding and Upholstering Works of which Mr. Cohnene is manager. Schulte was formerly in business for himself and was widely known. He was a member of Van Der Velpen Tent, K.O.T.M. The wife of the drowned man was prostrated by the sad death of her husband. 1 Source ⇓ |
